This set of web pages traces several major Hurd family groups on the Delmarva peninsula. Each group has its own web page (which you can select below) that comes with a name index for the Hurds in that group. If you are looking for a specific member of the family, you should search the name index in each of the following groups.
The first group is composed of the descendants of William Hurd, who first appears in public records in 1776 in Caroline County, Maryland, near what is Greensboro, Maryland, today. His descendants farmed on both sides of the Delaware/Maryland state line. I have collected information on many more individuals in this family group (to which my Hurd ancestors belonged). If you are unsure of which group may contain your ancestors, I would recommend you try this one first.
The second group is composed of the descendants of George Hurd, who first appears in the records of Kent County, Delaware around 1800. This Hurd family appears to have resided mostly in Delaware. In the most recent update of this website, I have combined the family of Joseph Hurd and Ann Thompson, previously listed separately, into the family of George Hurd, based on new evidence that Joseph Hurd was a son of George Hurd, Jr.
The third group is composed of the descendants of Thomas Hurd and Rachel Foreacres, who resided in Kent County, Delaware. This Thomas Hurd may have been a brother to Joseph Hurd, but the connection is pretty speculative at this point.
The fourth group is composed of descendants of Daniel and Miriam Hurd.
The fifth group is composed of descendants of Robert B. Hurd and Lucy Snyder. This Hurd family originated in northeastern Pennsylvania and moved to Delaware in the 1800s.
I would be happy to hear from any of the Hurds in these lines who may have old family records to help fill in the gaps in my research. I have made extensive use of Census records, tombstone inscriptions, and records in the Delaware Public Archives, but access to any family bible records would be of great value to me.
